Neff Neff Daily Beanie
Warm but Prone to Stretching
I’ve owned this beanie for years and it has been shoved in so many bags last minute as a “just in case” and proved its worth more times than I can count that this beanie is definitely worth the investment. It’s lightweight, warm and comes in a ton of fun colors so that if you and a hiking partner, a partner in general, or the whole family want to get one you can easily get everyone’s favorite color to avoid confusion as to whose is whose. However, they do stretch over time but cuffing the edge temporarily resolves the problem. Overall: yes, I would reccomend this and will most likely be investing in a new one to replace my ten year old one soon.
Nalgene Wide-Mouth Water Bottle - 32 fl. oz.
Great for day hikes and day-to-day life.
I’ve been a Nalgene user for most of high school and college, and have used the same bottle the entire time. They’re incredibly durable, having survived being dropped, thrown, stepped on, and the whole time has survived with minimal scratching. It’s definitely a bit heavy for UL hikers and thru hikers in general, but for day hiking, working out at the gym or for carrying around during the day, it’s fantastic. Cleaning it can be difficult, but a good bottle brush or some very dilute bleach in hot water shaken vigorously is effective at removing any built up grime. Overall a fantastic water bottle with more color options than you would know what to do with!
Volkl Flair 75 Womens Skis With 4motion 10.0 Bindings 2017
A good beginner to intermediate Piste Ski
While not top of their line, Volkl’s Flair skis are excellent for the skier who is still learning or is starting to move to more advanced skiing but is not ready for something more. They’re best used on groomers, as they aren’t great with powder, but perform beautifully on corduroy, hard packed snow, or ice. Further, the relatively low price makes them a good choice for someone getting into skiing or for a middle or high schooler who is still growing.
Patagonia Refugio 28L Backpack
More of a Commuter Pack but Gets the Job Done
I have the women’s version of this pack (26L as opposed to 28L) and while it works great for trekking across campus in a rainstorm due to it’s water resistant coating, I’m thinking about getting something different for day hikes. The biggest drawback against this as a true hiking pack for me is the lack of a hip strap. Entirely a matter of preference, but I prefer my hiking packs to be more secure against my back so the weight doesn’t shift as much. However as a commuter or a school pack it’s unbeatable: interior pockets for laptops and iPads, two deep water bottle pockets, organization pockets in the smaller pocket and a convenient vertical zip compartment for stashing a rain jacket or something else reasonably flat.
Vasque Breeze III GTX Hiking Boot - Women's
Excellent All Terrain Boot
When I was looking for hiking boots, I wanted something that would perform on a variety of trails and the Breeze III GTX exceeds expectations! The boot is secure to my foot and the laces do not slip at all. It has enough tread to help me up rock slabs in New England but is also flexible enough that I could wear it when hiking on the beach without losing traction or having sand get in it. Further, it’s waterproof which is invaluable because there’s nothing worse than wet feet. They take a while to break in, so take it slow but once broken in I’ve had no problems with hotspots. The only issue I’ve had is that the laces are a bit too big for the lacing hooks and thus slip out of them occasionally when you’re trying to lace it. Overall, a solid boot though for hiking and fashionable enough to wear around town after.
