I have been a Nebraska climber for four years. I am relocating to southern Illinois which will open up some awesome climbing and hiking opportunities. I have been slowly working my way into back packing. I work as a field biologist, specifically with mammals. So, let's just say I spend a lot of money on outdoor gear. I love climbing gear and it is my dirty little addiction. I am starting grad school but I still plan on making time for the outdoors either through field wok or on my days off.
Chaco Z/1 Classic Sandal - Women's
All purpose shoe
If you haven't jumped on this train might want to catch on up. This is a great all purpose sandal. I have used them as water shoes, belay, rappel, hiking, approach shoes. They are great. Also chaco's resole and repair service really helps to keep your trash impact low. These are the only shoe I were in the summer. Would reccomend.
La Sportiva Miura Climbing Shoes - Women's
Great pair of big girl climbing shoes
These are phenomenal shoes. I bought them as my first pair of aggressive shoes and I wore them to death. They were great in the gym and outside in all disciplines. I would recommend any one looking for their first big girl/boy shoe to consider these. It's a great shoe because of their versatility and options. Due to my foot shape (I have little man feet), I wear the men's lace ups. So there is a range of fits.
Patagonia Baggies™ Shorts - 5" Women's
From home to crag and everywhere imbetween
Great pair of shorts. I love the quick drying material and the durability. The only negative things I have to say on them is the cut is a little funky. For women who have a curvy bootie (like moi) you may be imbetween sizes. I originally tried on the medium and it was way to big in general but the small was a little bit of struggle to get over my booty despite the wiggling the shorts fit well. I would recommend trying them on before committing to a pair. I wear mine mostly in the climbing gym or if I might get exposed to water. These shorts are great, but due to my body shape, I wouldn't go on a long hike in them.
Patagonia Lightweight Synchilla® Snap-T® Fleece Pullover - Women's
My cozy little baby
One my favorite sweaters it goes with me everywhere. Planes, trains, work, and more. I have worn it climbing and other outdoor activities and it has worked so well. It is perfect for layering during the winter. If it is a windy situation I were this under a puffy or a wind breaker. The only thing is it is a little bulky for packing, if you are willing to risk the size and weight, it is a perfect sweater.
Friction Labs Gorilla Grip Climbing Chalk
I love friction labs chalk. If it keeps my hands nice and dry through tough sessions in humid places. I've noticed in places like horse shoe and clbing in southern Illinois I have to reapply less. If I am running low, I like to mix it with chalk cartel chalk. It greats a nice mix of smooth and chunky.
Cotopaxi Luzon Del Dia 18L Backpack
Perfect vacation day pack for everything
I got this bag from a subscription box and it was they best deal ever. This bag is a perfect size for everything. I have taken it on vacation, multpitch climbing, yoga class, field expeditions, and just running around town. The fun colors are great and it helps me spot my stuff when at the Crag, it's a great little climbing gym bag. The 18 L is great. The fabric is thin, but has held up to me dragging it everywhere for 3 years. I am finally to the point of considering retiring my current one. It is not water proof, but for surviving the Puerto Rican cloud forest and keeping my camera still functioning but damp, it did it's job.
Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device
The only device I use now
This device is wonderful. I use it for everything. Lead, top rope, belaying From above, it will keep you and your buddies safe. I still keep an atc for rapping, but I use this to belay everyone. I love using it because it gives me that extra sense of security in keeping my climber safe. The only thing bad I have to say about it is that it does not handle fat ropes well. Anything above 9.8 mm rope and it gets a little dificult to belay with.
evolv Oracle Climbing Shoe
As good, if not better than the miura
I bought this shoe on an impulse and it looked like a great shoe. It was one of the best decisions I have made. It is a stellar shoe. They are just as versatile as the miura climbing shoe. I love the Evolv "love bump" it helps make your toes fill the toe of the shoe. I have little man shaped feet and the unisex shape fits my awkward feet beautifully. The one thing this shoe has going against it is the Evolv rubber, it's just not as good as the vibram xs stealth rubber.
Altra Timp Trail-Running Shoes - Women's
Great shoes, but be patient with adjusting to zero drop
I love these shoes, they are really comfy and the treat rocks. They do require time to get used to the zero drop. I made the mistake of not being patient. I was not used to zero drop soles and my arches were not happy after a 6 mile hike in them. So please, for your feets sake take baby steps when just starting. My still arches tend to get very sore of I haven't worn them in a while and decide to go on a long trail in them.
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 90L
Great travel bag, okay beer cooler.
I own the 60 L bag. It is my go to travel bag. It has hauled gear to the crag, to resorts, and to biostations. I will sweatr by this bag till the end of time. Though it is water resistant and tough, it will keep moisture in the bag if there is any previously present. Again this bag is not water proof, the zippers will let in some moisture if you are standing in a torrential down poor or submerge the bag. So make sure you stuff is dry if you don't want it to stay wet. Pros: Compact with convenient back pack straps and over the shoulder straps. Will keep things dry, if the things are already dry. Durable Different size options Has doubled as emergency beer cooler. CONS: Will trap moisture if water gets in. The side pocket has an inside opening that can become unzipped. So if you have toiletries or small things in that pocket, it can get opened and things will migrate Not a great beer cooler.
prAna Halle Pant - Women's
Good 'spensive pants
These are great pants but they are expensive. I loved them to bits and I am about to retire my first pair after 3 years. They do run large and are pretty stretchy. I have tried other prana pants and the Patagonia venga rock pants, but they did not hold up as well as these. I finally wore out the butt of these during a scrambling session and am definitely going to buy another pair.
